Previous: Overview of Thesis
While many systems have dealt with the issues related to distributed shared
state applications and cache management, each has limitations which leads
us to believe that there is a better approach for Web-based DCAs. Cache
grain, name space, consistency, and other aspects of cache management must
be addressed with respect to the environment the cache is operating in.
This chapter evaluates a number of distributed systems on their approaches
for implementing distributed shared state. In the end we will argue
that a new data substrate, one implemented as a collage of the distributed
systems techniques used by the systems described in this chapter, is
efficient, scalable, and acceptable for graphical Web applications.
