While many systems have dealt with the issues related to distributed shared state applications and cache management, each has limitations which leads us to believe that there is a better approach for Web-based DCAs. Cache grain, name space, consistency, and other aspects of cache management must be addressed with respect to the environment the cache is operating in. This chapter evaluates a number of distributed systems on their approaches for implementing distributed shared state. In the end we will argue that a new data substrate, one implemented as a collage of the distributed systems techniques used by the systems described in this chapter, is efficient, scalable, and acceptable for graphical Web applications.
