Sun's Spring Operating System

We now have the research distribution of the Spring operating system in the department. It is installed in roc:/springos, with a bunch of glossy web pages. It can be booted on our SPARC 20s if you want to test drive it (talk to jpe@cs.duke.edu). We'd like to talk about the new ideas in Spring and how it differs from Mach.

We'd like to have somebody talk about the following (left over from last spring).

• The Great Logging vs. Clustering Debate for seek-avoiding file systems (a continuation of an old argument between Margo Seltzer and John Ousterhout about the merits of the log-structured file system).
