Instructions on how to get an account were posted earlier in the
semester, but they seem to have expired. I'm re-posting them with
some additional information.
Also, if you need superuser privledges, please let me know. Superuser
privledges are required for installing and debugging kernels. If you
already have an untrusted account, but think you'll need superuser
privledges, now is the time to let me know.
To make things slightly easier for me, I'd like to create the
remaining accounts and assign superuser privledges all at once. So,
if you need an account, or need superuser privledges, please send me a
request before Friday.
Here are the instructions on how to get an account:
----------------------------------------------------------------
Use ~gallatin/bin/alpha-osf1/des_crypt on a trusted alpha.
It takes a 2 letter salt, followed by a passwd. The salt is irrelevant
as far as the password you type in; it simply causes crypt to generate
a different encrypted string.
To mail me the encrypted string for the passwd 'h82mdb' (He ate too
many darn burritos), you would log onto a trusted alpha and do:
~gallatin/bin/alpha-osf1/des_crypt ay h82mdb
and mail me the output. Please - DO NOT use the same password as your
normal CS account. Also, let me know what you intend to use the
account for, and if you think you'll need superuser privledges.
Here is an example of what I'll be expecting:
prompt% ~gallatin/bin/alpha-osf1/des_crypt ay h82mdb | mailx -s 'untrusted account request -- mmb use -- superuser access not needed ' gallatin
----------------------------------------------------------------
Cheers,
Drew
