Recent Research in Web Caching
Caching on the world wide web has received a lot of attention lately.
Several researchers and service providers have been looking at ways to
improve caching to reduce user perceived latency, bandwidth usage, and
server load. Several products are already on the market. Some of the
changes to the HTTP protocol will improve the caching situation on the
Web.
I will talk about some new ideas in web caching involving piggybacking
of validation checks (to reduce future connections), server invalidations
(to notify proxy of changes to resources on the server), end to end
performance improvement (by grouping server resources and using
proxy cache signatures) and (time permitting) server assisted
cache replacement.
