CPS 108 : Posting News
Spring 1999
Due: Thursday, January 21
This introductory assignment is meant to get you accustomed to using
your acpub account by posting a message to the course newsgroup and completing
a small questionnaire. The former is something you should get used
to doing anyway and the latter will help us better suit the course to your
needs. To complete this assignment, you will need to access it online
using a browser and following the appropriate links.
Posting News
Every Duke student is given an account on the Public Unix Clusters. If
you are a new student, the account login id and password should have been
mailed to you. If you have been here awhile and don't know your login or
password, you can get this by visiting the Office of Information Technology
(OIT) on the first floor of the North Building. The book "Introduction
to the Public Unix Clusters at Duke" explains how to login, send mail,
and read newsgroups.
-
Post a brief note to the class newsgroup duke.cs.cps108
introducing yourself (who you are, your nickname, where you are from, what
you like to do, and anything else interesting about yourself). You should
check later to make sure your note is posted. Sometimes it only takes a
few minutes, but sometimes it takes an hour or two.
-
Your message must have the subject: CPS 108: (your full name here)
You would not believe how many people post with a different subject!
For example, Professor Duvall would post his message with the subject line
CPS 108: Robert Duvall
Initial Questionnaire
You should fill out the initial questionnaire here.
Within two days you will receive a copy of the results via email. There
are many mail programs available: in your browser, within emacs, and several
within your shell. Take this opportunity to ask around and try the
various options. Again, the book "Introduction
to the Public Unix Clusters at Duke" explains how to read and send
email.
