Computing Buzz Words
For this exercise, you may work alone or with a partner. Try to work with someone you have not yet
worked with this semester. Start this group activity by introducing yourself to each member of the group.
For this project, you will create three web pages that will exercise your knowledge of computing concepts.
When finished, you will add links to them on your course homepage. See the
resources links
for help on
adding links to and generally editing web pages.
For each category below, bonus points will be given if your page contains a good link not found by any
other students.
Who's Who
Computing has a rich and varied history, but also directly affects current events. Build a web page
summarizing the contributions to computing of the following people. In addition to your own words,
include links to at least three web pages containing different content relating to their contribution.
- Who is Shawn Fanning and what did he do (19 years old)?
- Who is Bill Gates and what did he do (20 years old)?
- Who is Marc Andreessen and what did he do (21 years old)?
- Who is Claude Shannon and what did he do (21 years old)?
- Who is Linus Torvalds and what did he do (21 years old)?
- Who is Steve Jobs and what did he do (21 years old)?
- Who is Jim Ellis and what did he do (23 years old)?
- Who is Dmitry Sklyarov and what did he do (26 years old)?
- Who is Tim Berners-Lee and what did he do (35 years old)?
- Who is Kary Mullis and what did he do (39 years old)?
- Who is Jarkko Oikarinen and what did he do (? years old)?
- Who is Phil Zimmermann and what did he do (very old)?
Is it Real or just Hoax?
The Internet has an incredible amount of information, but is all of it accurate? Build a web page that
supports or refutes each of the things listed below. In addition to your own words, include links to at least
two web pages that serve as credible sources to verify your comments.
- Kristen Clougherty's Cancer Fund
- Original Intel Pentium Processor cannot divide correctly
- Internet Cleaning Robot
- Emulex Corporation's Stock Crash
- Lemming suicide (i.e., following each other off cliffs)
- Students who offer a flat tire as an excuse for missing an exam are given a special make-up exam
What's the Buzz?
Modify the web page
here
to include links to at least three web pages that explain, describe, or debate a
computing buzz word used within the song. (Note, Sarah Michelle Gellar is not a computing buzz word :)
What to hand in
When you are finished, you and your partner should transfer your web pages to your respective
public_html/cps4 folder in the acpub system and update your course web page to link to the newly
transferred page using the guidelines given
here.
