Mobile & Interactive Art (Contest)
CPS 004.1, 25 July 2002
To reinforce the previous assignments and to make sure you
are getting the hang of
things, we announce the CPS 4 Mobile and Interactive Art Contest!
The last art contest produced some neat designs, so we were inspired to
let you do it again.
This time, we will have an Instructor's Choice and Student's Choice winner.
The Instructor's Choice will be chosen by the
course staff, while the Student's Choice will be chosen by all of you
in class. Winners will
receive extra credit points. Everyone must to produce a good faith
entry to get full credit for this as an assignment.
Requirements and Rules
Your original art work must be produced using the GP package on a classroom
PC and must heavily utilize both behaviors and interactions.
You should work in teams of two. Your art work must be
titled and some details given about the algorithm used to create it.
If there is anything subtle about how you interact with your work of art,
then you should provide instructions for that as well. Some
basic requirements are:
- There must always be something in motion.
- Clicking an object with the mouse should change things (either for
a limited amount of time or permanently).
- This is supposed to be "art", thus it should be attractive
and/or interesting.
Judging (by the staff) will be based on
- Originality
- Aesthetic appeal
- Program style and elegance
- Simplicity of the programs (the simpler the better, all things being equal)
Grading will be based on the above but you should get close to full credit
if the basic requirements are met.
Swapping Partners
Remember that you must change partners with each assignment. You may come
back to the same partners only every third assignment. Also note that
working alone is not necessarily seen as a strength.
Credit Toward your Last Test Score
Extra credit opportunities are available in regards to the last midt-term
exam. Good submissions will earn modest credit toward that exam score.
The maximum that can be earned for this purposed is one half of the
difference between 60 and your actual exam score. Extraordinary submissions
(especially those winning a "medal") will be able to earn as many as 12
points toward that score.
What to Submit
You should make a new project for each entry. When you are finished, you and your partner should
transfer the entire project folder created by Visual J++ to your respective public_html/cps4 folder in the
acpub system and update your course web page to link to the newly transferred project using the
guidelines given
here.
