Information about the Alice Workshop 2008

Teacher Training

Teachers will be trained in Alice in an extensive three week workshop that includes lessons, time for development of curricum materials, and testing of these materials. Teachers will be paid for their time in attending the workshops.

• Three weeks training in Summer 2008
• Week One: June 16-20, 2008. First week includes classes and hands-on practice with building Alice worlds.
• Week Two: June 23-27, 2008. Second week includes development of Alice modules or materials that can be integrated into a course.
• Week Three: Choose one of July 7-11, 2008 or July 14-18, 2008. The third week includes additional training while working in groups and a chance to test out materials on students attending a summer camp on Alice.
• One-day workshop during Academic year 08-09

  There may be a one-day workshop in the winter/spring of 2009.

• Two-Three day workshop during Summer 2009

  There will be a two-three day followup workshop in June 2009, dates to be determined.

Teacher Commitments

Teachers accepted into the program need to commit to all the activities in the grant.

• Two weeks training in June 2008 at Duke University.
  Dates: June 16-20, 2008 and June 23-27, 2008
• One week additional training in July 2008.
  You would come for only one of these weeks.
  Dates: July 7-11, 2008 and July 14-18
• Integrating Alice into some course/program at your school in academic year 2008-09.
• Attending the one-day workshop in academic year 08-09 at Duke University.
• Attending the two-three day workshop in June 2009 at Duke University.

Support

• Professor Susan Rodger from Duke University is the Site Director for the Durham Region.
• Five Duke students will be involved during summer 2008 and academic year 2008-09. Those students will be helping with the training of teachers, developing materials and support sites, helping with the summer programs, and helping in some of the schools during academic year 2008-09.
