Workshops 2013

There will be two Alice workshops in summer 2013. There will be a two-week workshop for new teachers beginning with Alice in July 2013, and a one-week followup workshop in June 2013 for teachers who attended one of our previous Alice workshops, with preference to those who attended the workshop in June 2012.

Thanks to funding from NSF and IBM these workshops are free, include lodging for teachers not in driving distance, include free breakfast and lunch, free parking and contact hours for CEU credits.

Special in 2013, the one-week followup workshop will be the same week as the Alice Symposium 2013. Teachers will attend the Alice Symposium for free as part of the followup workshop. More information on the Alice Symposium is here.

Two-Week Beginner Alice Workshop for Teachers

There will be a two-week introductory Alice workshop in July 2013 for teachers that want to learn Alice for use in elementary, middle and high schools. These teachers will also attend a one-week followup workshop in July 2014.

This is a free workshop that includes housing (must share a room, no housing on weekend in between), breakfast, lunch, breaks, parking and 60 contact hours for education credits. There is a small stipend. Travel is not included. Participants are expected to pay for their own travel to the workshop.

This workshop is targetted towards K-12 teachers (mostly 5th-12th grade) that would like to learn how they can integrate the Alice programming language into their curriculum and their students can integrate Alice programming into projects. Alice can be integrated into all types of disciplines: social studies, mathematics, language arts, science, technology, business, foreign language, music, art, etc. There is now a Spanish version of Alice for Spanish teachers.

• The dates for the Beginner two-week workshop are:
• July 8-12 and July 15-19.
  (9am-4pm each day, breakfast from 8:30-9am)
• What to bring to BEGINNER WORKSHOP IN JULY:
  • Please bring a laptop (PC or Mac) with you. It is best to bring a laptop that is similar to what you or your students will use at school.
  • Download Alice 2.3 onto your laptop from alice.org . Get the latest version. There is both a mac and a pc version. You don't need to do anything with it yet, just download it to your laptop.
  • A thumbdrive would be useful to have.
  • Bring at least three digital head shots (.jpeg, .gif, .png, etc) of yourself and friends or family.
  • During week two you will be writing lesson plans. You may not need anything for that, but if there is anything that will help you with that, then please bring.

This is a hands-on workshop. We will be teaching you Alice 2.3 and working with you on ideas as to how you can integrate Alice into your courses. It is best to download Alice 2.3 onto your laptop from www.alice.org before you come if you can. Alice 2.3 works well at all levels (3rd grade - 12th grade). We will talk about other versions of Alice at the workshop, but will focus on Alice 2.3.

Followup Workshop for Previous Workshop Participants

There will be a one-week followup workshop at Duke for teachers who attended one of our previous Alice workshops, with preference towards those who attended the June 2012 workshop at Duke. Space permitting we will allow teachers who attended one of our previous workshops and are currently using Alice to attend this workshop.

These workshops will include teacher presentations on their use on Alice and learning new Alice material. This is a free workshop that includes lodging for those not local, lunch, breaks, parking, and 30 contact hours for credits. There is a small stipend. There are no travel funds, participants are expected to pay their own travel to the workshop.

• The dates for the Followup one-week workshop (for teachers who came to the summer 2012 workshop) are:
  • June 17-21, 2013 (9am-4pm with Breakfast at 8:30-9am)

  This year the followup workshop is the same week with the Third Alice Symposium that will be held at Duke University on June 19, 2013. Teachers registered for this followup workshop will receive free registration to attend the Alice Symposium. More information on the Alice Symposium is here . Teachers using Alice should consider submitting either a poster, paper, and/or student Alice worlds for the contest. Also note that the times for June 19 will likely be a longer day, starting earlier and ending earlier.

• What to bring to FOLLOWUP WORKSHOP IN JUNE:
  • You should plan to talk about how you have been using Alice. You can do this as a presentation or informally with demos. Bring Alice worlds to Demo that you or your students have made. Also lesson plans if you have made any new ones.
  • Please bring a laptop (PC or Mac) with you. It is best to bring a laptop that is similar to what you or your students will use at school.
  • Bring Alice on your laptop. You can download the newest version if you want, Alice 2.3 alice.org . There is both a mac and a pc version.
  • A thumbdrive would be useful to have.
  • We will spend some time writing lesson plans. You may not need anything for that, but if there is anything that will help you with that, then please bring.
