FYI 2000, Transportation
Location of Workshop
The talks will take place primarily in B101, aka the Love Auditorium, of
the Levine Science Research Center (LSRC) at Duke. Some sessions will
take place in the D-wing (computer science) of the LSRC.
Airport Transportation
The Raleigh-Durham Airport (RDU) is 15-20 minutes from Duke/Durham.
There are two terminals, Terminal C for American and Midway and
Terminal A for all other airlines.
A taxi should be about $30 plus tip, head to baggage-claim, ground
transportation where there is a taxi-stand/attendant.
The R & G Shuttle Service has a desk near the baggage area of both
terminals. They tell me that
there's no reason to call in advance, their vehicles shuttle
continuously between the airport and locations in the Triangle area.
There number is 919.840.0262 or 1.800.840.2738. The fee is $20 one way,
$33 round trip. In groups of two or more the price is
$(20 + 6N) for N people.
Walking from Hotels
From the Brownestone, exit the hotel, turn right onto Erwin Road and
cross left onto Research Drive at the first light. The LSRC is about
a half-mile on your right.
From the Brookwood, exit the hotel, turn right, then left onto Fulton
and right onto Erwin. Walk about 300 meters to Research Drive, cross
left at the light and continue about a half-mile to the LSRC on your
right.
By Car
- From Chapel Hill: Take US 15/501. Take
the exit marked NC 751 and Duke University. Turn right at the
bottom of the ramp. Take the first left/first light onto Erwin
Road. Continue less than a mile to the second stop light which
is Lasalle Street (Pizza Hut on the left). Turn right at the
light which will take you to parking lots. Continue to the
stop sign passing a gated lot on your right (this is the
fall back lot if the close one is full). Continue through
the stop sign. As the road curves to the left the parking lot
is on the right. The first entrance is for meters, the second
entrance is gated, but the gate is open on the weekends
so you can park here. The LSRC and Hall-of-Science entrance are
down the stairs from the parking lot.
If it's full (unlikely) go back to the
lot you passed on the way in.
- From Raleigh/RDU Airport: Take I-40 West. Exit/stay
right on
the Durham Freeway (NC 147) as it splits from I-40.
Take the exit marked Elba and Trent
Streets. (The preceding exit is for Swift and Broad Streets.)
Continue straight (along Elba) until you bottom out at Fulton St
(the Brookwood Inn is on your right).
Turn left, then right after 100 yds onto Erwin Rd. After about
half a mile, there is a light. Turn left there onto Research
Drive. The second right is the entrance to the parking lots,
the first gated lot you come to is the LSRC lot, the gate
is open on the weekends. The LSRC is down the stairs from
this lot.
If the lot is full continue through
the stop sign and a large lot will be on your left.
- From Interstate 85 from the north:
Continue on I-85 most of the way through Durham and take the exit for
US 15/501 (Chapel Hill), which will be on your left. (The
preceding two exits are Guess Road, and Hillandale.) Continue
about 1.5 miles down US 15/501 and take the NC 751 (Duke Univ)
exit. Turn left at the bottom of the ramp. Now follow the
directions in first bullet above (from Chapel Hill).
- From Interstate 85 from the south:
Take the Durham Freeway exit (NC 147 South -- exit 172), which is a
few miles before Durham. Take the second exit, which is labelled
Fulton Street. Turn right onto Fulton Street at the end of the
ramp. Follow this to its end, turn right onto Erwin Rd. After about
half a mile, there is a light. Turn left there onto Research
Drive. The second right is the entrance to the parking lots,
the first gated lot you come to is the LSRC lot, the gate
is open on the weekends. The LSRC is down the stairs from
this lot.
If the lot is full continue through
the stop sign and a large lot will be on your left.
