CSL: Facilities: Desktop Computers

The C. S. Department provides each resident department member with a workstation. Currently the Lab provides commodity X86 PC's running the Ubuntu Linux distribution in a trusted configuration. Users requiring more flexibility may request to install Windows or another Linux distributions in an untrusted configuration.

The department follows a three to four year replacement cycle for computers, so any desktop workstation should be no more than four years old. The computers are all named according to a scheme, based on the year of purchase. New computers are put in place of the oldest computers in each room, and the assignment of computers to users within an office is left up to the agreement of the office members.

Please note that indidivudal desktop machines are not backed up. Please copy any important data to filesystems that are backed up.
