Security
- Remote access options include:
- Terminal-based (SSH) remote access
- Sending Email Remotely through the CS server, when not on the CS network
- Reading Email Remotely when offsite, using secure IMAP/POP.
- Common security issues:
- Securing Windows on your personal computer
- Avoiding becoming the victim of Email Viruses & Trojan Horses
- Avoiding being scammed by Email Phishing attacks
- The Lab staff will never ask you to provide your password via e-mail.
- Understanding the operation and use of Duke's search engine.
- Controlling access to web material
- A primer on htaccess files, the basis for access control on the web.
- Using basic authentication, the most flexible method, allowing access for non-Duke-affiliated users, but the most cumbersome, management-wise.
- Using Shibboleth, which allows easy access to any Duke-affiliated person, with little management required.
- Using Webauth, a deprecated protocol, similar to Shibboleth, and still required for some legacy operations.
