CSL: Anonymous FTP FAQ
The Duke Computer Science Department provides anonymous FTP service
to allow:
- The researchers and staff to share their work with the Internet Community;
- Anonymous users limited upload capability to transfer files to their colleagues
in this department.
Any other uses of this facility, such as unauthorized sharing of
copyrighted materials, are strictly forbidden.
Uploading
- Anonymous FTP services should be accessed via the address
ftp.cs.duke.edu.
- Anonymous users can deposit files in /pub/incoming
only.
- To prevent unauthorized use, anonymous users will not be able to
list or read files in this directory.
Retrieving
- /pub/incoming is not readable by department users.
- Deposited files are transferred to /usr/project/xtmp/incoming-ftp,
and then can be accessed by local accounts only.
- Files will be transfered over from the pub directory once
every hour.
- These files are subject to the usual
temp-filesystem policies, and will be automatically deleted
after 30 days.
- /usr/project/xtmp/incoming-ftp is not listable; you will need
to know the exact filenames of any uploaded files that you need
to access.
- Since it is possible that the upload of a file might still be in progress
when the local copy is executed, it's possible for a file to be
truncated; therefore, it's also a good idea to know and verify the
size of any uploaded files, or, use checksums.
