The Snow Leopard release of Mac OS X (10.6) has an issue authenticating to SAMBA. As of a couple of weeks ago when the last round of patches was released, there were no fixes for this problem. The only solution currently is not to upgrade to this release of the operating system. The following link (external) provides some more background on the problem.

The issue listed above is apparently corrected by upgrading Snow Leopard to release 10.6.4. After doing this, the instructions on connecting to the SAMBA server should work.
