CSL: Windows NT/98 Share FAQ

How do I set up my Windows NT/98 machine to access the network?

  1. Make sure your machine has obatined an IP address. This can be done by using DHCP or you can contact the Lab Staff to request a static IP address; please include the machine type, OS, and name.
  2. Properly install WindowsNT and networking software. If you are doing the initial installation of NT, it may automatically prompt you for these network settings. If not, go to
    Start → Settings → Control Panel
    and double click the Network icon, then use the following values:

    Identification
    	Computer Name   : use a unique name 
    	Workgroup 	: not important
    	
    Protocols
    Add TCP/IP Protocol if it is not already displayed
    Clients
    Add Client for Microsoft Networks.
    Protocols : Properties
    	IP Address      : provided by administrator
    	Subnet Mask     : 255.255.255.0 
    	Default Gateway : 152.3.137.61 
    	DNS             : 152.3.140.1 
    	Host Name       : your PC's name
    	Domain          : cs.duke.edu
    	Domain Suffix   : cs.duke.edu, duke.edu
    	WINS            : 152.3.140.28
    	
    Enable DNS for Windows Resolution : TRUE
  3. Go to Start → Run... and run the Regedit.exe command.
  4. From the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE on Local Machine window, navigate to the following key:

    For Windows NT:

    \system\currentcontrolset\services\rdr\parameters

    For Windows 98:

    \System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VNETSUP
  5. Click Edit → New → DWORD Value and name the new value:
    EnablePlainTextPassword
  6. Right Click on the above entry, select Modify and enter:
    Value Data: 1
  7. Click OK and then quit Regedit.ext
  8. Restart Windows NT.
  9. Login to the share server. Windows 98 users should remember to login to your Windows machine with your CS UNIX login.
