Thunderbird Secure IMAP/POP client

To configure Communicator or Thunderbird (version 2) to use a secure IMAP connection, using SSL (Secure Socket Layer):

  1. Go to the Edit → Account Settings... menu.
  2. Under Server Settings, make sure the Server Name is set to mail.cs.duke.edu
  3. Under Security Settings the SSL button should be checked. This should automatically set the Port to 993.
  4. Click OK to exit.

Do not forget to enable STARTLS/SSMTP for sendmail mail remotely. For more information see the following link, SMTP AUTH/STARTTLS
