Sending Email Remotely
When you are outside of the C.S. department network, you will
need to use a secure connection (
STARTTLS) in order to
relay email through the C.S. email server. These settings also work
inside the department, so you can always use the same
SMTP
settings. The following section will explain how to connect securely
using
STARTTLS and
SMTP AUTH.
General Configuration values for SMTP AUTH/STARTTLS/SSL
The SMTP server should be set to mail.cs.duke.edu,
this will allow access the mail server's certificate, without a
warning message.
The secure STARTTLS port is 25. In some circumstances
you may need to use port 465, as some ISPs and hotel networks will
block port 25, as a spam-fighting measure.
