Configuring SMTP AUTH/STARTTLS with Outlook

To configure Outlook to use SMTP AUTH/STARTTLS:

  1. Go to the Tools menu and choose accounts.
  2. Highlight your e-mail server name in the upper left hand pane of the window and click the properties button. Make sure the server is named mail.cs.duke.edu, or create a new account with the name mail.cs.duke.edu.
  3. Select the Servers tab at the top of the window that appears.
  4. For Outgoing mail (SMTP) server, use mail.cs.duke.edu
  5. At the bottom of the pane, check the box that says My server requires authentication.
  6. Click the setting button, next to the My server requires authentication, and check the box that says Use the same settings as my incoming mail server.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Select the Advanced tab at the top of the window that appears.
  9. Under the Outgoing mail (SMTP) port number, which should be 25, check the box says This server requires a secure connection.
  10. Click Apply at the bottom.
  11. Click OK at the bottom.
  12. Close the Internet Accounts window.
