COMPSCI 210: Operating Systems

Take Home Final Exam

Due: May 5, 2001, at noon.

README:

This is an untimed exam. However, restrictions against collaboration start immediately when you "open" the file. Once you see any of the questions, you may not study with other students or discuss any computer science topics with them. It is not permitted that you do anything like search on-line for an answer or collaborate in any way with any other person once you "open" this exam. Individual effort only!

It is open book and open notes. You may access assigned papers and lecture notes on-line instead of hardcopy if you wish. You may submit answers to the questions by email. If you do so, make sure you get an "ack" from me within 8 hours (email does really get lost sometimes). Keep a copy until you get the "ack".

I will expect that you have honorably adhered to both the letter and the spirit of the law against cheating & collaboration. Don't disappoint me!

For best results:
Be brief, but show your work for partial credit in case your answer may be wrong.

State
any assumptions you have to make (this is especially important since there is no proctor available in this take-home format to clarify ambiguities in questions although I will check mail periodically to answer questions). At the graduate level, students are expected to encounter vague problems and know when and how to make whatever assumptions are necessary to solve them. Share with me the assumptions you make so I can interpret your answers properly when I grade.

If you have an "*" on your midterm, you must do all problems. If you did not have an "*", you may skip problem 1. The extra points will apply to the midterm score.

If you turn in hardcopy, put your name on each sheet in case the pages get separated.
