Prof. Hartemink leads prospectives on a campus tour
On Thursday, March 31, prospective graduate students arrived in Durham for this year's Graduate Admissions weekend, an opportunity for admitted students to learn about the Department and graduate studies in Computer Science.
Friday morning dawned bright and sunny for a welcome and overview of the graduate program led by Department Chair Carlo Tomasi. Throughout the day, faculty members presented research overviews in algorithms, artificial intelligence, computational biology, and more. Prospective students also had the opportunity to meet with faculty for one-on-one time. The day concluded with a campus tour led by Professor Alex Hartemink.
The visitors also enjoyed informal downtime with current graduate students, including a night out in downtown Durham and a Friday night dinner and house party. And before the prospective students left on Saturday, they joined Tomasi, Dean of Natural Sciences Robert Calderbank, and other faculty for a farewell brunch at Pop's Restaurant in Durham.
This year's graduate student recruitment couldn't have happened without the efforts of many graduate students who devoted their time and energy, says student coordinator Vamsi Thummala. In addition to participating in the visit, current graduate students contacted prospective students earlier this spring, prior to the acceptance deadline, to answer questions and offer help. "We had huge student involvement and they deserve a lot of credit," says Thummala.
