I started my PhD in 2012. Previously I worked in image processing and automated network planning. Duke offers a great department with people willing to help you through every step of the process, be it administrative or academic. This is especially helpful for international students like me who can easily feel lost at the beginning.
The number of women in computer science is at its all-time low; I think if women are shying away from the field due to low self-confidence, and the belief that computer science just comes to boys naturally, they should reconsider. It is a lovely, logical, beautiful area which can be both hands-on and theoretical. The field is also very wide, and I am sure any girl could find something for herself in it.
