EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT: CHEATHAM COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER

ABOUT

Aaron Valentine, a 15 year old Life Scout belonging to the Boy Scout Troop in Cheatham County, Tennessee, passed away in May, 2012 before he was able to begin work on his Eagle Project. Aaron was a kind and gentle young man who was a great lover of animals and had decided to help the Cheatham County Animal Control complete some much needed improvements to the shelter and to the shelter grounds.

Our goal in constructing this website is to keep all of you who loved Aaron and all those who would love to help these animals have a better life apprised of our progress and to encourage donations to these projects. We will post the progress of these projects and you will be able to see what wonderful progress we are making.

HORSE BARN

This project, which is of the highest priority, is to provide shelter for the two horses (Ghost and Missy) rescued earlier in the year. These horses were rescued due to their condition and have been on a successful re-feeding and socialization program. They will be trained as search and rescue animals for Cheatham County and also serve to introduce college students to horses, their behavior and their maintenance. They currently reside in a small paddock with storage building. However, there are two newly formed paddocks with pastureland waiting for these deserving horses. The goal is to construct one 2 stall barn containing a dry storage area for hay and tack in each paddock. The greatest need for these barns will be for materials and manpower. A number of blueprints are in the process of being reviewed before we can launch into this endeavor.

ANIMAL KENNELS

This project involves the construction of a roof over the outdoor dog kennels. These kennels house a fair number of animals that would ordinarily not be able to be saved, as they are overflow from the interior of the shelter. There is currently a tarp in place over a portion of all of the kennels to offer shade and shelter, but a more permanent and durable solution is greatly needed. Currently no plans have been made and any suggestions and material donations will be helpful.

IRON MAIDEN TRACTOR

In order to help move hay bales and maintain the paddocks and the surrounding area, an old Yanmar tractor that has been donated to the shelter and sits in a spot next to the shelter needs to be rehabilitated as well. The tractor’s fuel injector pump has been sent to Texas to be refurbished and the tractor will be taken to the wonderful folks at Gossett Farm Equipment in Centerville for new tires and maintenance. All of this work will be paid for out of donations already given for the eagle project. When the tractor returns, it will be repainted and named “The Iron Maiden” after Aaron’s favorite rock and roll group.
