Political Issues:
With the onset of strong cryptography such as a public-key cryptography, a natural security issue has emerged because of fear of advanced encryption technology falling into the hands of terrorists, drug dealers, and so on. This concern has led the US government to push for a key forfeiture system, for a classification of strong encryption technology as munitions, and for weak encryption technology to be only available to the public, which are all flawed ideas. For instance, if only weak encryption technology was available to the general public, it would allow medical records to be accessed without the permission or knowledge of both doctors and patients. This possibility has raised severe privacy concerns among the American public.
