U.S. Student Travel Grants

The ACM Special Interest Group on Operating Systems (SIGOPS), with support from the National Science Foundation and corporate sponsors, will be offering a limited number of scholarships to enable students to attend its flagship conference, the ACM Symposium on Operating Systems Principles (SOSP).

The intent of these scholarships is to permit the attendance of students at educational institutions in the United States who could not otherwise be present at the symposium. Consequently, only those students who cannot afford to attend the symposium without this aid, and whose educational institutions are unable to fund them, should apply for the scholarships.

Women and members of underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply. Applications from underrepresented groups will be given special consideration. Whereas most applicants are likely to be graduate students, undergraduates who are actively involved in systems research projects are also welcome to apply.

A typical scholarship will cover the SOSP conference fee, including double-occupancy hotel room and all meals during the conference, attendance at all conference events, and a copy of the proceedings. Additional funding (not to exceed $535) may be awarded toward the cost of international travel with the goal of bringing the remaining cost of transportation to the student down to the level of domestic travel. U.S. flag air carriers must be used.

A student who wishes to apply should submit the following:

  • A cover letter indicating the amount of support required. The student should provide an informal quote for the airfare on a U.S. carrier from the departure city to Paris and two comparison quotes from the departure city to hypothetical domestic conference locations at San Francisco and Boston.

  • A letter of recommendation from the student's advisor supporting the application. The letter should explain why the student ought to be considered for aid in terms of the technical merit of the student's participation.

  • A short position paper written by the student explaining what benefit is expected from attending the conference and why the scholarship should be granted. The statement should describe any research the student has been doing. It should be no longer than three pages. Presenting student authors of accepted papers do not need to submit a technical statement.

  • A financial statement signed by both the student and the advisor detailing all other potential sources of travel funds and certifying that sufficient funds are not available to enable travel to the conference without this award. Advisors are expected to give first priority for their own grant funds to their student authors. Awards will be limited to one student per advisor and two at the same institution.

  • A completed SOSP registration form, without any accompanying payment. The information on this form will be used to register the applicant if the scholarship is granted.

Following the conference, funds will be paid after travel receipts and a brief trip report have been filed with the Selection Committee Chair.

The deadline for receipt of applications for student scholarships has been extended to July 25, 1997.
Notifications will be made by August 15, 1997.

Applications will be reviewed by a five-member Selection Committee. Send applications to the Chair of this Selection Committee:
