I've always intended to put some pictures up here in the "life" category,
but it's been almost three years now that all you get is a Maui rainbow.
It was a beautiful rainbow, but there is more to life.
Here are a few pictures from long ago and far away. When I was in
grad school at the University of Washington I spent most of my free
time in the Cascades, one of the world's Great Places. I didn't carry a
camera until 1992, and even then I rarely carried it on "real" climbing
trips. At the time I thought my memories would be enough, but now
I wish I had the pictures. Oh well, I have a few, and through the
wonders of scanning technology, here is a sample for your enjoyment.
Many of my pictures feature my wife Nonna. I met her
through our mutual circle of climbing friends.
We have been married now for over ten years.
Here is a rundown of the pictures:
- cascade01 is from the Fortress-Chiwawa col in the Trinity area,
looking north toward Dome Peak. It is early in the morning after a
wicked storm, in July 1994.
- cascade02 is Nonna on Seven-Fingered Jack, also in the Trinity
area, on a different trip in July 1994. It is looking west toward
Buck Creek drainage.
- coyote01 is in Coyote Gulch in the new Escalante Wilderness
declared by then-President Clinton, in October 1999. We love the
Utah canyons and have spent a good bit of time there.
- honeymoon** are from our honeymoon in the Canadian Rockies
in September 1994. These
pictures were taken
above Lake Louise. I was happy to return there in 2001 for the
SOSP conference, but the weather then wasn't as nice as the stellar
indian summer weather we had in 1994. The big peak behind
Nonna in honeymoon02 is Temple Mountain. We climbed it the next
day (up the whimper route on the back side, the Moraine Lake side).
- trinity01 is on or near the summit of Fernow, also in the Trinity
area in July 1994. It is looking north toward Bonanza Peak and the
North Cascades National Park.
- triumph01 is one of the few "real" climbing slides I have. It is
near the top of the knife edge on the Southeast Ridge of Mt. Triumph,
in July 1992.
Someday I will add more. Now if I could only find those slides of our
first date on Mt. Shuksan....
