Henry's Journal

July 14, 2008

I started today by helping some of the teachers get online again. Then, I sat in the room and helped the students get started. Around 10:45, one of the teachers came up and dragged me up to help her on her world. We were miscommunicating about the word "Loop" for quite some time, where she wanted the camera to loop in a "circle" while I was thinking of a programming loop. However, I eventually figured out what she wanted and I resolved her issue. Another teacher asked me about difficulties or accomplishments we had with the students. I spent most of the afternoon trying to working on a script, while helping the kids. Unfortunately, I got unplugged twice, so my work kept getting deleted. I looked at it again after I got home, and realized that I didn't need to use a vim macro. I currently have a script that operates from a directory where all the folders are, and zips the folders in addition to generating the HTML list code. I will show you tomorrow.

I started this morning by demoing my bash script. Then, I got dragged upstairs to help a couple of teachers get online. I have also added the signature to all my HTML tutorials, although I still need to regenerate the PDF's. As I helped the kids with downloading the worlds, I cannot help but notice how less tech-saavy this group is than my peers were at their age. Moreover, there are those among them who are ready to move faster, who are ready to learn it all. After I got back from the trip in the gardens, I updated the PDF's for the remaining word documents that I had already converted. I will try to convert more tutorials in the afternoon. I ended up spending about an hour in the afternoon just helping the kids. Then, I took another hour to work on converting my Class-level variables tutorial. I spent the remainder of the afternoon working with the students.

Today was spent working on converting my class-level variables tutorial to PDF, while primarily working with the kids. I pushed Austin through some of the morning stuff more quickly, and showed him a couple of new things. Also, I showed Kristin the scene change. The students in the third row seems to be advancing much more rapidly than the others. At the end of the day, I have 4 more pages (out of 28) to fix up for that tutorial.

This morning, I gave presentations on Billboards, Scene Change, and user IO. In the afternoon I spent almost all time working with Dylan, Austin, and Aidan.

I have finished converting the class-level variables tutorial, and it is now on the repository site. I spent the day working with the kids and collecting worlds. I watched the animation fair in the afternoon.
