links

These links are just a few of the most useful or interesting websites that I have come across through many years of surfing. I have divided them into appropriate categories.

science and technology

slashdot - An informative, if somewhat biased, daily look at anything to do with technology. Updated almost hourly.

tom's hardware guide - A site with lots of information about electronics and computer hardware. Particularly helpful if you are looking to upgrade or purchase some new hardware. Updated daily.

dan's data - A collection of responses to emails from a man that seems to know everything about technology. Contains a lot of great advice, harware reviews, and LOTS of hard to find information. Updated about twice a month.

computational biology

genescan - A web-based program that predicts genes and intron and exon locations from genomic sequences.

PredictProtein - Another web-based program that can predict secondary protein structures and other special protein structures, such as transmembrane helices.

BLAST - NCBI's BLAST page, which allows you to make a BLAST search through GenBank for a given genomic sequence.

Entrez - A nice listing of all the databases that NCBI hosts.

EBI sequence analysis - A list of several different homology and similarity searching tools available at EMBL-EBI.

swiss-prot - A curated protein sequence database that is searchable in many different ways.

programming resources

Java online tutorial - A long list of tutorial topics from the creators of Java, Sun Microsystems.

Java 1.4.0 API - A locally mirrored copy of the Java API.

STL tutorial - A good brief overview of the C++ Standard Template Library, with several useful examples.

STL reference site - This is the offical Silion Graphics reference site for the Standard Template Library. It is very thorough, but is not intended as a tutorial.

beginning perl - WROX Press' Beginning Perl is an excellent online introduction to programming Perl. It is also printable, as each chapter is available as a pdf file.

other

flickr: create your own planet pool - This is a technique that creates a stereographic projection of an equirectangular panorama. I always thought these pictures were incredibly cool, and I can't wait to make my own.
