The way it works (Beach Week, May 2000) |
In September of 1999 a friend of mine, Ella, jokingly said that I
needed to meet this one friend of hers, Anna. Why? "Her hair's red
and you like redheads" was the rationale. This friend of hers lived
one floor below me in my apartment building but we didn't actually
meet until February of 2000.
We didn't have tons in common at first glance. We were both UVa students, but that was about it. I was raised in Charlottesville (where UVa is located) and had the stereotypical distrust and spite for the average student ("They're all from Northern VA, drive SUVs, can't park, and clog up traffic during football games!"). She was from No. VA, drove a SUV, and likes UVa football (I know better than to cheer for a lost cause). I, on the other hand, had long hair, dressed in ripped jeans and t-shirts, listened to my music way too loud, was tactless and crude at times, and was a former member of the Charlottesville punk/metal scene. Which may not have immediately impressed my Catholic friend. Oh, and I'm a computer science geek and she's a former cheerleader. One of those people that likes socializing and people and helping them out and all those other things which are usually doled out as punishment to CS geeks in the form of a help desk assignment. Although apparently I developed a soft spot for her and vice versa (such shameful behavior on my part) and she's even got me to retire my "another-strong-wind-and-that-shirt-is-falling-off" line of ripped clothing. I don't suppose anyone will believe me if I say I fought it the entire time (and if I do, don't buy it). So much of a soft spot I actually find it amusing when I'm oh-so-gently woken from naps as shown on the left. We're probably disgustingly cute together, which is something new to me (being cute that is ... especially for someone who's used to being a bit rough around the edges). So much of a soft spot that the phrase "head over heels" probably applies. Again, such shameful behavior on my part. :) So I dedicate this page to my geek girl. I have some
pictures of us, as well as some
other stuff she or I have put
together. It's all very cute and such, so be warned. :) Update: To the surprise of no one that knew us, on July 8th, 2001, I asked Anna to marry me. I popped the question near sunset during a light summer drizzle in Darden Towe Park, Charlottesville (she said "yes"). Wedding plans are coming along, but spending a year away -- or at least a few hours away -- from one's intended is none too fun. The countdown begins ... :) Update (again): The wedding was July 14, 2002 (Bastille Day!) at
Our Lady of Good Council Catholic Church in Oakton, VA. More details
and such can be found at our
new site.
