Back in '88, we tried this and did a few quick tests to see if the
result made any sense. It was quite promising:
- mate retrieval: use a French translation of an English document as
a query to a collection of English documents. Finds the correct mate
in the 99% range.
- consistency: Use a short query-like English phrase to retrieve
English documents and French translations. About 4 out of top 10 the
same.
- term-term similarities: take a random English term and look at
which other terms are closest to it in French. Often quite sensible!
