Comments about my downloadable thesis

Dear Friends,

This version of my thesis contains numerous revisions from the version I submitted in May 1998. I have corrected some typos and made some changes in formatting. I have made some minor, clarifying changes to some figures. This version is formatted to print on duplexed devices, which means that several blank pages have been inserted to force chapters to start in the right place. This version now uses compressed 600 dpi fonts. The original used uncompressed 300 dpi fonts.
