CPS 6: Assignment #1

Due: Monday, Sept. 4 by 11pm

10 points

The purpose of this assignment is for you to learn how to send email and how to post messages to newsgroups. Every Duke student is given an account on the Public Unix Clusters. If you are a new student, the account login id and password should have been mailed to you. If you have been here awhile and don't know your login or password, you can get this by visiting the Office of Information Technology (OIT) on the first floor of the North Building. The book "Introduction to the Public Unix Clusters at Duke", which is available at the Gothic bookstore, explains how to login, send mail, and read newsgroups.

Labs will not be held this week, Aug. 28 - Sep. 1, but hopefully will be staffed by TA's during lab hours to provide help. We also hopefully plan to staff Teer 106 and Carr 125 clusters in the evenings. In addition, getting started sessions will be run by the ACM in Carr 125 this week at 8pm on Monday through Thursday evenings. If you wish to attend one of these sessions, you need to be there at 8pm when it starts.

  1. Post a brief note to the class newsgroup duke.cs.cps006 introducing yourself (who you are, where you are from, what you like to do, and anything else interesting about yourself). You should check later to make sure your note is posted. Sometimes it only takes a few minutes, but sometimes it takes an hour or two.
  2. Send an email note to your lab TA and tell him/her what your programming experience is, if any. To find out who your lab TA is, you should check the CPS 6 home page. Lab TA's will be added to this page by late Tuesday night. The CPS 6 home page is accessible via netscape at the URL address:

    http://www.cs.duke.edu/~rodger/fall95/cps6/intro.html

Alternatively, from the main Duke page, select "classes", followed by "Class home pages" to reach the CPS 6 home page.

You should receive a reply back from your lab TA acknowledging receipt of your message. If you do not receive an email note back within 24 hours (not counting the weekend), you may not have sent the email message correctly, try again.

Don't wait until the last minute to start this assignment!
