As Jeff Vitter mentions in his first letter, <EM>Threads</EM> was
<q>"designed to highlight the many components that make up our
Departmental fabric, as well as to provide an ongoing forum for
interaction and exchange."</q> Since that inaugural newsletter the
Department has seen fantastic growth in the number of majors, graduate
student enrollment, and faculty. Though <EM>Threads</EM> has captured
only a small portion of the activities over the last three years, it
has, if somewhat sporadically, provided alumni and friends with an
insider's view of the Department.

<P>

We hope <EM>Threads</EM> will be put on a more regular publication
schedule--one at the end of the spring semester and one during the
fall semester. This will allow us to feature special honors during
graduation in the spring and summarize faculty research projects in
the fall. We hope to keep the newsletter informative, upbeat, and
fun.

<P>

If you are not already receiving a copy of <EM>Threads</EM> and would
like to, please send your name and address to
<a href="mailto:threads@cs.duke.edu">threads@cs.duke.edu</a>.
We will add your name or organization to the mailing list. We're always
happy to hear from alumni and friends, so send us a note with your
comments and suggestions.

<P>

Thank you, and I hope you enjoy reading <EM>Threads</EM>.
