Statement of Values

As part of Duke, the Department of Computer Science shares Duke’s values of respect, trust, inclusion, discovery, and excellence, as well as a commitment to diversity and inclusion as outlined by the statement from the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences. As members of the computing community, we also subscribe to the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct by the Association for Computing Machinery. Specifically, we would like to highlight the following core values.

Responsibility

We are committed to using our knowledge and skills to advance the frontier of computer science, to benefit the public, and to improve the environment we live in.

Integrity

We will be honest with our words, actions,  and scholarly artifacts. We will not make deliberately misleading statements, falsify data or results, or plagiarize.

Excellence

We are committed to continuous innovation and learning, and we strive to achieve excellence in teaching, research, and service. We will maintain high standards in the work we produce and seek to expand our knowledge and improve our skills throughout our professional life.

Diversity

We embrace all aspects of diversity and believe diversity makes us stronger together. We appreciate the fact that each individual came from his/her unique culture and background, and our differences broaden our worldviews and protect us from prejudice. We respect diverse ideas and opinions and fully acknowledge that our opinions and perspectives are shaped by our own lived experiences.

Fairness

We value equality, respect, justice, and inclusion. We believe everyone should be treated fairly and without bias or discrimination. To the best of our ability, we will ensure the systems and technologies we create do not induce unfair or discriminatory treatment to others.
