Qualifying Exam Syllabus
Analysis of analytical truncation errors and architectural rounding errors, and error propagation.
Numerical methods for solving a system of linear equations, from specially structured systems to factorizations of a general system.
Approximation and optimization methods, including in particular the least squares approximation and optimization.
Iterative methods and their analysis, including stationary methods such as the Gauss-Seidel method and non-stationary methods such as the conjugate gradient method.
