Duke Computer Science professor Cynthia Rudin, along with colleagues Aaron Struck (Wisconsin), Berk Ustun (Harvard), and Brandon Westover (Massachusetts General Hospital) are finalists for the 2019 Innovative Applications in Analytics Award (IAAA) for their work "Transparent Machine Learning Models for Predicting Seizures in ICU Patients from cEEG Signals." Their interpretable machine learning model for predicting seizures in ICU patients is currently in use, and stands to have a substantial impact in practice. This important work is the first serious effort to develop such models for seizures in ICU patients.
Recognizing the creative and unique application of a combination of analytical techniques in a new area, the IAAA award promotes the awareness and value of the creative combination of analytics techniques in unusual applications to provide insights and business value. IAAA finalists will present and the winner will be announced during the INFORMS Conference on Business Analytics & Operations Research in mid-April 2019. This is Rudin's third attempt at the award, after having won it twice previously for other collaborative projects in 2013 and 2016.
